Brown Garbanzo Beans Sundal

Karuppu Konda Kadalai Sundal, Amma used to make these on Saraswathi Pooja. I just tried to tweak her recipe a little bit...

1 Cup Brown Garbanzo Beans (karuppu konda kadalai)
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 tsp mustard
1tsp jeera
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp oil
Curry leaves
A pinch of salt and sugar to taste

Soak the beans over nite and cook them in a pressure cooker. Add the salt when you cook the beans. In a pan heat the oil and add the mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add the jeera and onions. Saute Onions and add the chilli powder and garam masala for 3 - 4 minutes. Then add the cooked beans and saute for another 5 minutes on medium flame. Add a pinch of sugar if needed. Garnish with curry leaves and serve. This recipe serves 2 people.

Yummy Sundal Ready !!!!

Tips : You can do a lot of mix n match with this. Try replace onions with grated coconut. This also tastes really good. However my mom's traditional way is to add grated coconut and dried red chillies (without onions, chilli powder & garam masala). You will love this as well.

  1. Hey Sangee, there was a point when I used to eat just black chickpeas for breakfast, and sometimes as a snack too. That's when I lost a lotttt of weight :) I used to vary it - top with curd and sev, apdee ellam. You should try using roasted cumin powder, the ones they use in all chaats, instead of garam masala too.

  2. But of course, the last time we made this was during navarathri and appo traditional way thaan :)

  3. Hi sangeetha, I made this recipe with sprouted "kadala" yesterday.. It came out very well :) I dont know if it is a traditional accompaniment with rice , however we had it with rice and it was great. Thanks a lot for the recipe.

  4. Hii .. is this Ashwati??? cool... am glad you liked it... I usually have this as a snack ;)...but then you can have it with rice too...You can use any sprouts / lentils / beans with this recipe...I will post a curry also on this... very soon..
